Your Google Business Profile primary category is the single most important on-profile ranking signal. But secondary categories — which most contractors either don't use or use once — are where significant ranking positions get left on the table.
Here's how it works: each category you're assigned to makes you eligible to appear in searches for that category. An HVAC company set to only "HVAC Contractor" misses searches for "Air Conditioning Repair," "Furnace Repair," "Heat Pump Service," and a dozen other high-volume queries that are covered by separate, more specific categories. Each missed category is a set of searchers who will never see your profile.
Google allows one primary category and up to nine secondary categories. Most contractors use one. Top-ranking profiles in competitive trades average 6–8 categories. That gap is your opportunity.
Before getting into the trade-specific stacks, understand what makes a category appropriate:
